Mit den Einnahmen des Abends wollen wir AktivistInnen unterstützen, die einen Konvoi aus Berlin organisiert haben, damit Geflüchtete sicher von Osteuropa nach Deutschland und andere Länder kommen.

From Ewa Jasiewicz: Urgent Solidarity needed on the Serbian-Hungarian Border

I have just spoken to a close friend down near Horgos at the main border crossing between Serbia and Hungary, not far from the Serbian Capital of Belgrade. Hungary has enacted a law which criminalises refugees who try to enter the country without papers. They now face jail if they attempt to cross. Internment camps are in the process of being set up. The Hungarian border is shut.
Austria, Germany, Macedonia and Croatia say they are closing their borders – it is not clear for how long. 4000 soldiers are patrolling the Hungarian border and in Horgos, Serbia – opposite the now well known camp of Roszke, police are lined up across the main border crossing preventing anyone from entering or leaving, including EU passport holders. This means that even tents and food and water which my friends with EU passports were trying to bring in are not able to get through. Earlier today refugees managed break through in to the transit area of the main border gate and have since occupied a highway and fields. They are now trapped in a no-man’s land buffer zone in front of a locked gate, more fences and lines of Hungarian police. They have no food, water or shelter and more and more people continue to arrive.

Right now there are some 3000 refugees there, mostly from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen. My friend is seeing a large amount of injuries which have been caused by beatings and rubber bullets, including open and slash wounds – attacks at the hands of various police forces of all the countries people have passed through. People are starting to fight one another for food.
The UNHCR arrived this morning in their land cruisers and left. Medicines Sans Frontiers have a small field clinic. Media are present but there are no activists.
My friend along with another friend climbed the fences and hung a simple, make-shift banner saying: “EUROPE SHAME”. Further down the highway they hung another on the fence: “EUROPE LOST HUMANITY”. It’s not clear what will happen to the people trapped in the dark now in this buffer zone since all borders are shut and military force will be used against people who try to get through. Will people be locked in prisons? Will they be shot? People are protesting. People are chanting and clapping and shouting in defiance, in resistance to what is happening to them. I could hear this loudly down the phone. We need to echo this call for freedom and embody it. These borders are killing people. People are going to die. People are going to be jailed. People are going to lose one another. They already have in their thousands, drowning, trying to reach a place of safety. What is needed right now is direct action, mass solidarity from people around Europe to come and physically resist these border regimes. Physical Solidarity. Direct Action. These borders need to come down and courageous refugees have led the way in tearing them down. We need to back them up.
